Joyce accepts projects on a wide range of textiles with skilled versatility. Notable projects include the Pre-Columbian Chavin and Huari cultures of South America, the sacred and secular textile traditions of China, the Himalaya’s and Japan, the indigenous Native American cultures, as well as 20th Century masterworks by artists such as Magdelena Abakanowicz, Sheila Hicks, Lia Cook, Trude Guermonprez and Katherine Westphal.

Joyce’s work is often on display at international art markets such as the San Francisco Tribal and Textile Show, the International Conference on Oriental Carpets, and the Whitehawk shows of Santa Fe, NM. Joyce’s conservation and display mounting services are sought after by prominent textile dealers and collectors worldwide, and she offers custom packing, shipping design and oversight for art venues and markets.

Specialized conservation services:

  • Custom mounting and framing of textiles
Joyce designs and creates by hand both framed and flexible archival display mounts for all textile artforms – samplers, quilts, embroideries, tapestry, carpets, 3D textiles and ethnographic works, among others. Expertise also offered in custom dyeing of materials and shade matching.
  • Pictorial Reintegration
For responding to extensive deterioration in pictorial and iconographic textiles, Joyce designs and oversees the production of custom display environments that integrate precise conservation treatments with visual infill of lacunae (loss). Means of accomplishing these treatments range from hand made facsimiles to digital print reconstructions of iconography. These unique and completely reversible treatments establish the pictorial reintegration of the damaged imagery or design, and promote a renewed appreciation for the context and iconography of the textile as a whole.
  • Installations
Joyce creates innovative installations of large and room-scale works of art, and re-adaptation of historic hanging systems with new, engineered solutions. Joyce manages teams of trusted colleagues to transport, lift, and install on site, and offer programs for custodial upkeep of displays in private and public spaces.
  • Storage and Documentation of Collections
She reviews storage environments, makes recommendations for design, environmental controls, and materials, and manages implementation of these guidelines for collections. Joyce also supports estate planning in the creation of Condition Reports for all textiles, and organizes teams to photograph, describe, and collate artworks for collection management systems. All projects are documented before, during and after treatment and a written report is provided to all clients.
