Joyce’s unique expertise has been formed through decades of parallel experience as both a contemporary art maker and custodian of ancient and historic works. She shares this expertise as conservator, artist, event programmer and collaborator with regional and national art communities in myriad ways.
From 2006 to 2013 Joyce held the staff position of Collections Manager at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles (SJMQ&T).
Joyce oversaw the care and development of the permanent collection and trained many dedicated volunteers over her 6.5 years with the museum. Over one hundred and forty accessions were evaluated and accepted into the collection during her tenure, as well as IMLS and NEH grants received in support of the collection.
Joyce also created and implemented “The Art of Collecting”, 5 annual programs for SJMQ&T on textile artists, art collecting and collectors. Notable speakers featured for this program were collector Dorothy Saxe, artist and former Cranbrook Academy Director Gerhardt Knodel, and artist and CCA professor Deborah Valoma. To accompany these symposiums, Joyce designed and led art tours providing access to important local collections and artist studios.
Joyce currently continues to serve the museum as a member of their Collections Committee, overseeing the donations, care and development of the permanent collection.
